The collection of native orchids within the grounds of Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel is staggering, boasting over 372 species. Guests at the hotel can walk through the tranquil orchid gardens to observe these with expert guides, with some orchids so tiny they require a looking glass to spot.
This month, two new species of bromeliad orchids were identified – completely new to science – (Tillandsioideae – Bromeliaceae) growing abundantly in Machu Picchu Inca ruins, by ERIC J. GOUDA from the Botanic Garden at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands and with the support of José Koechlin, Inkaterra´s founder & CEO, Carmen Soto, resident biologist & orchid specialist at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel & Julio Ochoa, Biologist at Machu Picchu Sanctuary. Pachamama is the spiritual Earth Mother figure in Peruvian culture, a goddess revered amongst the indigenous peoples of the Andes.
Associated primarily with fertility and the harvest, the Pachamama is a positive deity whose presence is toasted during meetings and important celebrations across the country through the spilling of “chicha” (a fermented maize beverage) on the floor before drinking as well as in more elaborate rites associated with the present day Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras.
Amidst the lush gardens of Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel sits the UNU Spa, an authentic Andean Spa with its emphasis on traditional Andean medicinal treatments and therapies inspired by ancient Incan ritual and mysticism. Peterson Control Union Green Choice Sustainable Tourism Standard is the first Green certification approved by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RVA)
January 20th 2012. – With the presence of the Minister of Tourism and Commerce, José-Luis Silva, Inkaterra received the First International Certificate in Sustainable Tourism given by CU Green Choice Sustainable Tourism Standard. During the ceremony, the Minster highlighted the importance of the award given to a Peruvian tourism organization such as Inkaterra, which has focused on ecological conservation since 1975.
