NEWSLETTER MAY 2020

While staying safe at home, the Inkaterra Film Festival will jolt your movie weekends with handpicked films presented by the legendary Werner Herzog – one of the most audacious filmmakers in cinema history, who grasped the essence of the Peruvian Amazon through his bold vision with the cult epics Aguirre: the Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982).

In his latest video introduction, Werner Herzog invites you to an exclusive viewing his masterwork Fitzcarraldo, winner of the Best Director Award in the 1982 Cannes Film Festival – streaming this Saturday May 30, 3p.m. (GMT-5), available for only 24 hours at the Inkaterra website.

Based on an original idea and co-produced by Inkaterra founder José Koechlin, Fitzcarraldo is arguably the greatest folly in cinema. Four years in the making, it is one of the last ethnographic documents of communities native to the Peruvian Amazon, and is crowned by the legendary scene of a transatlantic steamboat dragged up a mountain – one of the boldest metaphors for man’s conquest of the useless. The Miami Herald named both Fitzcarraldo and the documentary on its astonishing production (Les Blank’s Burden of Dreams) amongst the 10 best films of 1982.

Follow us at @InkaterraHotels, as we will feature in the upcoming weekends a selection of short films produced in 2018 during Werner Herzog’s creative workshop at the Inkaterra Field Station, deep in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios.

CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS AT INKATERRA

Students from the Retreat & Ecology Campus (Institute of Environmental Sustainability, Loyola University Chicago) stayed at the Inkaterra Field Station in Madre de Dios for the annual course on Conservation & Sustainability of Neotropical Ecosystems.

During their most recent visit to the Amazon rainforest, students performed revealing citizen science projects on a vast array of subjects within the Inkaterra areas of influence – tropical fungi; reptiles and amphibians; butterflies; and bird diversity. ANDEAN BEARS AND OTHER SIGHTINGS AT
INKATERRA MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO HOTEL

Last May during lockdown, Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) were spotted at the shores of the Vilcanota River – a few meters away from Inkaterra Asociación’ Andean Bear Conservation Center, soon to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Since rescuing its first specimen during the production of BBC’s documentary Paddington Bear: The Early Years (2001), starring Stephen Fry, Inkaterra studies and conserves South America’s only bear species. A case study for wildlife management in the region, which relies on the Smithsonian Institution among strategic partners.

Other recent sightings include the elusive and nocturnal oilbird (Steatornis caripensis), registered for the first time at Inkaterra – an addition to the 214 birds species previously inventoried within hotel grounds.

JOSÉ KOECHLIN SPEAKS OF
SUSTAINABILITY IN POST-COVID SCENARIO

Inkaterra Founder and CEO José Koechlin was one of the keynote speakers at the virtual conference Reinventing Tourism in Times of COVID-19, organized by San Ignacio de Loyola University (USIL), where he addressed sustainability as one of the main assets to be most valued by travelers in a post-COVID scenario.

“We need to be aware of what our market will demand,” José stated. “Travelers will be seeking a deeper connection with themselves… and looking for destinations defined by nature and culture, such as Peru. Thus, we need to invest in improving infrastructure and services on our main attractions. We have the opportunity to achieve tourism based on sustainable development, on circular economies, and on local employment.”
