LONELY PLANET:
MACHU PICCHU CARBON NEUTRAL
IS ONE OF 10 GOOD NEWS OF 2020

The Machu Picchu Carbon Neutral initiative, aiming to achieve the first carbon neutral Wonder of the World, was mentioned in the article “10 good news stories that lifted our spirits in 2020” by Lonely Planet.

Steered by the strategic alliance between Inkaterra Asociación, AJE Group and the Machu Picchu Town Hall, Machu Picchu Carbon Neutral comprises a series of activities undertaken over the past four years –  including the carbon offset campaign “One million trees for the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and its buffer zone” and the innovative, award-winning waste management program.

The carbon neutral certification, overseen by Green Initiative and granted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) by 2021, places Machu Picchu at the forefront of sustainability in Latin America and the world. “Thankfully, conversations about the importance of sustainable travel have become more frequent over the last few years, with many people realizing that drastic action must be taken in order to secure the future of the planet,” Lonely Planet states.

MDPI CHALLENGES JOURNAL
FEATURES PAPER ON INKATERRA ASOCIACIÓN’S
SPALTING FUNGI RESEARCH

The December issue of MDPI’s Challenges Journal (Volume 11, Issue 2) features the academic paper ‘Exploratory Sampling of Spalting Fungi in the Southern Peruvian Amazon Forest’. The article stresses that: “Most of the research related to Peruvian Amazon fungi is focused on edible mushrooms and pathogens. Other important fungi, such as the spalting type (decay fungi that pigment wood internally), are not broadly studied, as most of them do not produce fruiting bodies and can be difficult to locate. Spalting fungi, however, are of broad economic importance due to their ability to produce pigments that enhance wood aesthetics, resulting in an increased economic value.”

Aiming to begin understanding the diversity of spalting fungi within certain regions of the Amazon, NGO Inkaterra Asociación contributed with Oregon State University on research studies to identify potential pigmenting and zone line producing fungi in wild conditions. The results obtained start a specific database of spalting fungi in the Amazon and, with it, help support an effort to increase the forest value of ecosystems primarily used for a few high-valued tree species.
