A TOWER WITH A VIEW:
INKATERRA CANOPY WALKWAY
OPENS NEW PLATFORM

Financed by the first loan ever granted to the private sector by the Global Environment Facility (GEF-CAF), the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway is a hanging bridge system 100ft above the ground to study wildlife in the rainforest canopy.

Under the supervision of Dr. Phil Wittman, Inkaterra’s main attraction in Madre de Dios now features a new observation platform with a height of 124ft (38 meters), ten meters taller than its previous version. The tower offers travelers – birders, especially – a privileged view of treetops, the Madre de Dios River and the Rolin Island facing Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica. The effort comes after opening the new Inkaterra Meeting room at the foot of the Canopy Walkway, designed for outdoor training, work conferences and other events.

SAVING SOUTH AMERICA’S
ONLY BEAR SPECIES

National Geographic published a revealing article on the various threats Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) face due to poaching. Despite regulations to forbid cross-border wildlife trafficking and ministerial resolutions that strictly ban bear hunting, locals still poach this vulnerable species as a means to protect farmland. Andean bears are also hunted for their body parts, for shamanistic rituals that use their fat, teeth or bones.

Nat Geo highlights Inkaterra Asociación’s effort to save the Andean bear “also known as the spectacled bear or Paddington bear, after the fictional character in the children’s books written by Michael Bond.” The chronicle features a short documentary produced at Inkaterra’s Andean Bear Conservation Center.
