NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018

In a joint effort to turn Machu Picchu into a global sustainability model, the Machu Picchu Town Hall, Peruvian beverage multinational AJE Group and Inkaterra have opened the city’s first biodiesel production plant at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. The initiative ensures a healthier environment, as it avoids 2000 liters of waste cooking oil being spilled to the Vilcanota River on a monthly basis. According to studies, one liter of oil pollutes 1000 liters of water.

A campaign to raise awareness on oil pollution is currently allowing Inkaterra to collect each month 600 gallons of waste oil, proceeding from local restaurants, hotels and houses. The new plant produces biodiesel (which reduces carbon emissions up to 44% in comparison to traditional fuels), as well as biodegradable and petrochemical-free glycerin used to clean the hotel’s stone pathways and the streets of Machu Picchu Pueblo.

The public-private alliance has also announced a future project to be developed by Vasco Masías, from Alimenta Group. A pyrolysis plant that decomposes organic waste through high temperatures will produce Bio-char, used as a nutrient-rich soil amendment that reduces fertilizer requirements.

FILMING IN PERU WITH WERNER HERZOG:
PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCED

Inkaterra and Black Factory Cinema congratulate all 48 filmmakers selected for the practical workshop Filming in Peru with Werner Herzog. A unique experience with one of the most defying directors in film history, the event will be held from May 1-11, 2018 in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios–the iconic backdrop where Aguirre, The Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982) were produced.

After a thorough analysis of over 400 submissions, the selection team would like to thank all candidates for their generosity, passion and creativity put into each application.

To be hosted at Inkaterra Guides Field Station, the workshop will allow participants to develop a short feature under Werner Herzog’s supervision, from screenwriting to shooting and editing. Herzog himself will select the best short films for distribution at international festivals.

INKATERRA EXPLORER GUIDES
TAKE PART IN BIRDING WORKSHOP

233 bird species were observed during a six-day practical course on birding techniques, conducted by renowned ornithologist Fernando Angulo (CORBIDI). Inkaterra Explorer Guides scouted hotel grounds and surroundings in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios, throughout an itinerary that included hotspots such as the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and Lake Valencia in the Peru-Bolivia border. Additionally, owling excursions allowed participants to spot nocturnal birds such as the Tawny-bellied screech-owl (Megascops watsonii).

The workshop was a unique opportunity for Inkaterra Explorer Guides, always willing to improve their birding skills and to learn more about species identification, taxonomy and bird calls, as well as the various bird habitats and ecosystems across Peru.

BIRD OF THE MONTH:
THE GREEN-AND-WHITE HUMMINGBIRD

One of the 903 bird species registered at Inkaterra areas, the Green-and-White Hummingbird (Amazilia viridicauda) is endemic to the cloud forest in the East Andean slopes of Peru. Member of the Trochilidae family, this hummingbird can be identified by its green head, back and flanks; throat, belly and vent are white and its tail is black. In December 2016, a live streaming bird cams project in association with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology allowed viewers to follow an open-cup nest with two chicks, from hatching to fledging.

If you spot this bird at Inkaterra, we’d love to see! Snap and share your photos & videos with us. Don’t forget to tag us and hashtag #BirdofMouth #BirdYourWorld.

EL COMERCIO ALERTS ILLEGAL FISHING IN CABO BLANCO

About ten purse seines (each with a capacity of 15-25TN) were found fishing just 150 meters away from the Cabo Blanco coastline. The practice is illegal according to Peru’s General Fishing Law, which forbids the industrial extraction of marine resources within five nautical miles–exclusive to artisanal fishing. Unregulated purse seining is detrimental to ichthyologic diversity in Northern Peru, as minimum size or closed seasons is not obeyed. According to El Comercio, last year 241 illegal crafts were detained in 55 operations. However, the lack of constant patrolling by the Peruvian Navy was pointed out by local authorities.
