NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016

Inkaterra celebrates 40 years pioneering ecotourism in Peru with a short feature produced by GLP Films and National Geographic Society. Showcasing the emblematic Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel in the midst of the Andean cloud forest, the film spans from José Koechlin’s involvement as co-producer of Werner Herzog’s classic films Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982), to the development of Inkaterra’s sustainable tourism model in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios and (1975) the Cusco Region (1991), where the brand has recently opened Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba (new VIRTUOSO® member).

Inkaterra’s new film highlights flora and fauna inventories within hotel grounds, where 214 bird species and 372 native orchid species have been registered. Conservation projects such as organic tea farming and the Andean Bear Rescue Center, which studies the only bear species native to South America, are discussed by Inkaterra Founder & CEO José Koechlin and the Inka Terra Asociación team.

OCTOBER SIGHTINGS AT INKATERRA HACIENDA CONCEPCIÓN

A large northern caiman lizard (Dracaena guianensis) was found by Inkaterra Explorer Guide Elías León near a swampy area, while escorting a group of travelers on their way to the Native Farm. This rare and hard-to-find reptile is mostly aquatic and known for being a great climber. It was about 1.2 meters long and was resting on a palm tree known as Huicungo (Astrocarium murumuru). During the same week, Explorer Guide Indira Gonzales encountered a family of Howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus), as well as other two monkey species, the Titi monkeys (Callicebus oenanthe) and Andean Saddle-Back Tamarins (Sanguinus fuscicollis), feeding from Ojé leaves (Ficus insipida) at the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción Trail System.
