FIRST GENOMICS WORKSHOP FEATURED IN VIDEO

Watch a new video on the first genomics workshop organized by Field Projects International at Inkaterra Guides Field Station. Genomics in the Jungle: Sample to Sequence in the Amazon Rainforest, Lab and Field Training (July 22-August 4) explored how genetics is revolutionizing biological research, with the successful deployment of instruments that enable molecular work to be conducted ‘on-the-fly’ and in the field.

The new analysis lab at Inkaterra Guides Field Station minimizes the hassles and barriers associated with transporting samples. The equipment and resources to extract, amplify, and sequence DNA are already available within hotel grounds in the Amazon rainforest.

BIRD OF THE MONTH:
WHITE-THROATED TOUCAN

Distributed in tropical areas of Central and South America, toucans are appealing birds from the Ramphastidae family. Their characteristic long bill is an extention of its body, which lets them reach tree cavities, nests or other places in search of food. The White-throated toucan (Ramphastos tucanus) is a regular-sized bird, with a body length 19.5 to 24 inches. Its loud call can be heard from a long distance, and it is easy to find it perched at the canopy level of the Amazon rainforest such as Inkaterra grounds in Madre de Dios.

INKATERRA HACIENDA URUBAMBA’S GASTRONOMIC APPROACH

Explorers Rebecca Wolff and Alec Jacobson visited Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba to venture into the main attractions at the National Geographic Unique Lodge – from a sunset hike to chicha de jora making. “We joined Inkaterra’s head chef, Rafael Casin, in the fields. Casin is a native of Peru but trained in Europe,” writes Jacobson about the Earth to Table experience. ““The extensive, manicured grounds create a landscape of natural tranquility, but the plants are not just decorative—acres of land are cultivated using traditional, organic methods to provide produce for the Hacienda’s restaurant.”

Known for his photo spreads featured in GQ, Rolling Stone or Esquire, Danish filmmaker Morten Anderson shot a new video for Inkaterra La Casona – named the best hotel in Central and South America by Travel + Leisure’s 2018 World’s Best Awards. The feature reveals the wonders inside the first Relais & Châteaux property in Peru, a 16th Century manor house that hosted Spanish Conquistador Diego de Almagro and ‘Libertador’ Simón Bolívar.
