THE RESERVA
CUZCO AMAZONICO, PERÚ: |
| |
|
BIOLOGICAL
INVESTIGATIONS, CONSERVATION, AND ECOTURISM
Biological investigations were initiated at the reserve in 1979.
The most extensive biological surveys were undertaken in 1989-1990
by biologists from four institutions in the BIOTROP project administered
by the Center for Neotropical Biological Diversity at The University
of Kansas. This program endeavors to sample and record data on trees,
terrestrial vertebrates, and selected quadrants groups of invertebrates
in a rigid manner within a system of quadrats, so that accurate
comparisons can be made between sites and thus provide a quantitative
assessment of species richness and species associations in relation
to physical environmental variables in the neotropics. Preliminary
results indicate that biodiversity at Cuzco Amazónico is
similar to that at the more extensively studied Reserva Tambopata
and at Cocha Cashu in the Parque Nacional Manú, both in Madre
de Dios. |

ANNOTATED CHECKLIST
OF THE MAMMALS OF CUSCO |
| |
|
AMAZÓNICO
Reserva Cusco Amazónico (Reserva Amazónica) supports
a mammalian fauna of at least 100 species belonging to 9 orders
and 28 families. Included are 9 marsupials, 42 bats, 7 primates,
5 xenarthrans, 1 rabbit, 24 rodents, 9 carnivores, 1 tapir and 2
artiodactyls. On the basis of our observations of mammals in adjacent
areas (e.g.Lago Sandoval), reports in the published literature,
and our knowledge of species distributions and habitat requirements,
we estimate that an additional marsupial, 12 bats, 6 monkeys, 4
xenarthrans, 3 rodents, 6 carnivores and 3 artiodactyls probably
are occasional or scarce members of the fauna. If a total of 135
mammal species is correct, our efforts recorded 74% of the mammal
fauna of Cuzco Amazónico. |

ANNOTATED CHECKLIST
OF THE BIRDS OF CUZCO AMAZONICO |
| |
|
|
| |
|
The Reserva
Cuzco Amazónico supports an avian fauna of at least 366 species
belonging to 49 families. During the course of the BIOTROP investigations
342 species of birds were recorded. This represents 94% of the species
currently known from the Reserve. Specimens were obtained for 143
species or 42% of the species recorded during the BIOTROP project.
Species accounts: Glaucidium minutissimum, Caprimulgus sericocaudatus,
Nonnula sclateri Hellmayr, Hylexetastes stresemanni Snethlage, Cymbilaimus
sanctaemariae and Canioptilon meilhenny. |

ANNOTATED CHECKLIST
OF THE AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES |
| |
|
OF CUZCO AMAZONICO
One hundred and forty-five species of amphibians and reptiles (64
anurans, 3 crocodilians, 5 turtles, 1 amphisbaenian, 23 lizards
and 49 snakes) ar ereported from the Reserva Cuzco Amazónico,
Departamento de Madre de Dios, Perú. Hyla schubarti, Ololygon
chiquitana and Pseudis paradoxa are reported from Peru for the first
time: Pseudogonatodes guianensis, Ptychoglossus brevifrontalis and
Leptotyphlops diaplocius are reported for the first time from southern
Peru. Three unnamed species of frogs are included in the fauna.
The herpetofauna at Cuzco Amazónico has many species in common
with the reserva Ambopata and sites (Cocha Cashu and Pakitza) in
the Parque Nacional Manú, however some species are known
from only one or two of the sites. |
