Hugo, the eldest of four brothers and son of farming parents, was born in Lima but never lived in the capital. He grew up in a community near Puerto Maldonado city. At the end of his middle school education, Hugo moved to Puerto Maldonado but had already spent much of his life in the rainforest interacting with nature. At age 16, Hugo finished high school and left his family to work in the timber, mining, and chestnut industry. These jobs would later help afford his university studies in tourism. He worked for many years as a freelance guide where he visited many tourist destinations in Madre de Dios. Today Hugo is part of the Inkaterra Guide team where he is developing his native fishing skills while sharing his love for botany with travelers.
