AREQUIPA The second largest city and commercial capital of the South of Peru, Arequipa is probably the most striking city in
the country due to its elegant historic center with colonial buildings built of sillar, a porous white volcanic stone. Dubbed
as "La Ciudad Blanca" or the White City, Arequipa is the gateway city to the world famed Colca Canyon. Surrounding the city in
full view are three majestic snow capped volcanoes namely El Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu with peaks reaching an
average of 6,000 meters above sea level. |
| |
COLCA CANYON The Colca Canyon, twice the size of the Grand Canyon and 3,400m (11,150 ft.) deep is a huge valley carving
out an astonishing massive break part of a tremendous volcanic mountain range more than 100km (62 miles) long. Located
in Southern Peru, fourteen colonial-era villages which date to the 16th century are scattered across the Colca Valley, as well
as Pre-Inca ethnic communities who lived in the region for some 2,000 years. |
