Puerto Maldonado offers an extraordinary blend of climate where the tropical Amazon and the characteristics of the location characteristics converge with the occasional intervals of cold and dry conditions particular to higher latitudes.

The extensive and high ranges of the Andes running from the southern tip of South America to the north towards the Peruvian-Bolivian altiplano, acts as a restraining wall which drives the masses of cold, dry Polar air in its long route from Patagonia towards the north in the Peruvian jungle during the period from fall to spring.

The region around Puerto Maldonado is the gateway of these cold fronts commonly known as “friajes” (in Portuguese friagem).

With a normal temperature between 20°C-22°C at dawn and 31°C-33°C in the afternoon, the temperatures during friajes can plunge to a minimum of 8°C-9°C and during high pressures, temperatures can rise up to maximum of 40°C. The vast climactic wealth that comes with rainfall of about 1,500 millimeters a year, two thirds of which are between November and April, favors the surroundings of Puerto Maldonado with one of the world's most exceptional ecosystems.

Cool comfortable cotton clothes are required to counter the heat while sweaters and jackets may be handy at night.
