PROGRAM:
Malaria research in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
More Information

ACTION: Scientists specialized in malaria from the Atlanta Center for Disease Control (USA) investigated the Anopheles mosquito, the transmitter of the disease malaria, in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. The research was financed by Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel and the NGO Inkaterra.

RESULTS: Despite the presence of the Anopheles mosquito in the area, it was determined that it was not harmful because the life span of the mosquito was hindered by the altitude since Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is at the altitude of 2,020 masl, which does not allow the disease to develop in the mosquito’s body in order to transmit the disease.
