Acclimatization is the process of the body adjusting to the decreased availability of oxygen at high altitudes. Considering varying altitudes of destinations in Peru, travelers must try to go first to the lower ones before ascending to higher altitude cities. Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) or soroche is a pathological condition that is caused by acute exposure to low air pressure usually above 2,400 meters approximately 8,000 feet). Cusco is located at 3300 meters/ 10,800 feet above sea level. The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high too quickly; symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, sleep disorder among others. Before your travel to a high altitude destination, avoid eating too much, and on the arrival day itself, also eat less to avoid altitude sickness. If you stay at a high altitude, rest. Limit any walking or activity; you can explore the area, but take it easy especially on the first day. Drink plenty of water and avoid taking alcoholic beverages.

The official currency is Nuevo Sol (PEN) divided into 100 céntimos. Visa is the most widely accepted credit card, but all major international credit cards, including Diners Club, American Express and MasterCard, are accepted in many, but not all, establishments. Travelers’ cheques may be difficult to exchange in small towns and villages, and travelers are advised to have cash on hand. US Dollars are the easiest currency to exchange, and many restaurants, hotels and shops in the main cities accept dollars for payment. Casas de cambio (exchange bureau) often give better rates than hotels and banks, and can be found in the city center as well as Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

Within Peru, when making international calls, dial 00 + country code + city code + telephone number. For inter-city calls: 0 + city code + telephone number. Public telephones accept coins and cards, which can be bought in kiosks and supermarkets. Ensure that the card you buy is for the telephone company you wish to use. Mobile phones for making local as well as international calls while traveling in Peru are available for rental at the Lima airport, upon arrival in the country. Peru is well connected to the Internet, with Internet connections in most hotels and city hotel rooms.

Although no vaccinations are officially required, visitors are advised to take precautions, especially if planning to travel to jungle regions. The most common ailments for travelers are diarrhea and altitude sickness. Health care is limited in these areas, so safety measures must be taken regarding food and alcohol intake. While traveling in Cusco, keep a careful watch around you at all times, just like in any cosmopolitan area in the world. It is not necessarily an immediate threat but always take common sense precautions for security and safety: watch out for pickpockets and thieves especially in busy touristy areas such as markets. Do not leave your camera or wallet out on a table at a cafe. Do not walk down dark alleys by yourself, or if you do not know the area well. You should definitely try to learn a few key phrases in Spanish before you travel, if not to help yourself get by, then at least to make the locals think you can speak the language, making you a seem like a more conscientious and careful traveler.
