Birding Rally Challenge 2013

Next week, from 3rd to 10th December, the third Birding Rally Challenge begins in Peru. Considered the world championships for birding, for those who aren’t in the know, this is the ultimate event in the ornithological world, bringing together the most renowned birding teams from all over the globe in a six-day contest to decide the best Birding Team in the world.

The challenge for the teams from the United States, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Colombia is to cover the greatest number of habitats within a certain area in a limited amount of time counting the number of bird species they can identify; and naturally, the winners are the team that has spotted the highest number of species.

Peru has been specially chosen to host the Birding Rally Challenge because of its expensive natural biodiversity. Peru is a true treasure in ornithological terms. It is home to 1836 species of bird – that is one fifth of all registered species in the world, Peru is the second leading country in the world for bird diversity, and the best in terms of bird observation. The unique habitats that Peru has, from lush wetlands to vibrant cloud forests means it is host to visiting species, as well as the 120 endemic bird species that call Peru home.

Organised by the Inkaterra Hotels, the Inkaterra Association and PromPerú, the teams will travel 840km through Peru, from Tambopata in southern Peru, to the bio diverse cloud forest of Machu Picchu, and the teams will stay at the Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica and Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

The actual challenge won’t simply be a walk in the park for our teams. They will have to contend with the changing climates of Peru, from the tropics of the rainforest to the coolness of the Andes, not to mention the strict rules about bird sightings.

But this competition is not simply about birdwatching. The Birding Rally Challenge has some core principles behind it. Designed to develop ecotourism in Peru, the competition promotes conservation and sustainable tourism, especially regarding the local communities that are often overlooked by traditional tourism.

In December 2012, the first rally lasted five days, and a total of 692 species were sighted. The second rally, Nor Amazon, trumped this total, with the birding teams observing 864 separate species in Peru – that’s 10% of the world’s registered bird species.

The 9th December is deadline day for our five birding teams, with the closing ceremony and winners being announced at 19.00. Will it be another successful rally for the American team? Only time and a keen eye will tell.

Inkaterra was awarded at last week’s Educational Travel Conference 2013 for their efforts towards Responsible Tourism. The event takes place to recognise the efforts of those members that are continually working on developing and implementing their initiatives towards the future of sustainable tourism. The event took place in Orlando Florida, where tourism representatives, suppliers and governments joined together for the five day summit. The ETC’s mission is to facilitate deeper, more enduring connections between travellers and the communities in which they visit. Through authentic, people-to-people exchanges and strong guide interpretation, this can be achieved.

This year was a special celebration as Inkaterra were recognised for their 38 years of effort towards promoting eco-tourism and sustainability in Peru. Throughout Inkaterra’s history, they have pioneered authentic experiences in Peru, whilst ensuring they preserve and rescue Peru’s geography, nature, traditions and cultures.

The dawn of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on all that Inkaterra has achieved in 2012; a year filled with great memories, discoveries and successes.

2012 began well with Inkaterra becoming the first Peruvian hotel chain to win the ‘International Certificate in Sustainable tourism’ by the CU Green Choice Sustainable Tourism Standard. The minister of Tourism and Commerce commented, “It is an honour that a Peruvian hotel chain is the first organization worldwide awarded with such an important Certification.”

February was an exciting time for Inkaterra when two new species of orchids were found at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. This harks back to an observation made back in 2001 by the American Orchid Society who announced that in all probability Inkaterra has the world’s biggest collection of native orchid species (372) in their natural habitat, within a private setting.

Inkaterra was in the spotlight again in March with Conde Nast Johansens, the international luxury travel guide,  who nominated Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel as the “Most Excellent Eco Resort” in the 2012 Awards for Excellence. Inkaterra was the only hotel to receive an award in Peru.

The conservation efforts of Inkaterra were highlighted in April with the team picking up the award for Conservation at The Tourism of Tomorrow Awards. The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are organised by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the winners were announced at the WTTC’s Global Summit in Tokyo, April 16-19, 2012.

Throughout the summer we saw the continuation of the Peruvian food craze with the opening of fine dining restaurant Lima in London. With other Peruvian food diners launching across the globe, and the ever-growing empire of Gaston Acurio, Peruvian food is considered one of the most varied and rich of the world. The World Travel Awards took note of the trend naming Peru as the Best Culinary Destination in the world in 2012. Hailed as a ‘gastronomic superpower’, the South American country fought off stiff competition from notable foodie destinations such as France, China, Italy, Spain and Thailand to come out on top as the best place in the world to eat.

Festivals in Peru are a time for celebration and remembrance. This June, as they do every year, visitors from across South America and around the world travelled to Cusco for the annual Inti Raymi festival, the most important ceremony of the Inca Empire calendar. Each winter solstice, native residents honour the Sun God marking the beginning of a new year: the Festival of the Sun.

There were celebrations a plenty in October, as Inkaterra was recognised for the third consecutive year at this year’s LATA Awards in London. This year Inkaterra was awarded for its efforts towards sustainability.

November was an exciting time for Peru, Inkaterra, and birding enthusiasts across the world. Inkaterra Associación (ITA), worked alongside the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) & PROMPERU as co-organisers, to launch Peru’s first ever Birding Rally Challenge. The challenge was a great success with the winning team from Louisiana State University, nicknamed the ‘Tigrisomas’, identifying 493 species of birds! The UK team – The Forest Falcons – came a close second, narrowly missing out on being crowned the winners by just three species.

In November, the awards continued with Inkaterra being nominated in The World Travel Awards for the World’s Leading Corporate Social Responsibility Programme at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. We were also delighted to received the Relais & Chateaux Sustainability Award at the R&C Congress in Torino.

To round off an excellent year, in December, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel was awarded first position in Peru in the Travel + Leisure 500 Best Hotels of the World in 2013.

Another great accolade for Inkaterra was brought about by education. Mr. Diego Comín, Professor at Harvard Business School (HBS) presented Inkaterra in its very own unique case study for Harvard Business School. The case discusses Inkaterra as a leading Peruvian ecotourism organisation and the unique business model that is currently in place.

2013 looks to be an exciting year already, with a further Birding Rally Challenge already in planning, and the opening of Inkaterra’s Sacred Valley property ‘Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba’, due in the second half of the year. On that optimistic note, Inkaterra looks forward to 2013 and wishes everyone a joyous Christmas, and a happy New Year.

Inkaterra: A Harvard Business Review Case Study

Mr. Diego Comín, Professor at Harvard Business School (HBS) has presented Inkaterra in its very own unique case study for Harvard Business School. The case discusses Inkaterra as a leading Peruvian ecotourism organization and the unique business model that is currently in place. The case also emphasizes the potential barriers which exist in the development of the tourism industry; and also opens the debate on whether governments will be ready to use tourism as a generator of growth, and if so, what would be the best strategy to keep the environment safe.

“The educational goal for this case is to understand the base of Inkaterra´ s business model: evaluate its optimum evolution & the extensions of Inkaterra´s strategy to the development of ecotourism in Peru; explore current restrictions for its growth; evaluate possible tensions between its expansion and the environment” says Diego.

Inkaterra foments scientific research in order to develop business activities based on conservation carried out by local communities, in order to improve their quality of life,  with sustainable tourism. Chairman and CEO of Inkaterra José Koechlin was invited to participate in the presentation of the case in the Harvard Business School classrooms this November. Professor Diego Comín studied Inkaterra for four years together with Mr. Rohan Gopaldas (HSB) & Diego Rehder (Universidad del Pacífico-Peru).

This is a great merit for Peru and Inkaterra. Seemingly, the case has now been considered as a “Business & Government Relations: Economic Development Case” and not only a business case. It has been stipulated that ecotourism may be used by governments as a “motor of growth and of environment conservation”. “This is something very innovative”, says Mr. Luis Suarez-Clausen, ex-president of Pepsico International. Since November 28th- December 6th, Inkaterra, with the support of Promperu, has put into practice another pragmatic example with the organisation of the first World Bird Watching Championship.

This is another great accolade for Inkaterra and a fitting end to what has been a bright and successful year for Inkaterra.

It’s been another great week for Inkaterra. We have been nominated in The World Travel Awards as a potential winner of the World’s Leading Corporate Social Responsibility Programme for our Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. Voting for the awards is now open and closes on November 25th. The World Travel Awards was founded in 1993 to recognise, acknowledge and reward excellence in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry worldwide. Now in their 19th year, The World Travel Awards is regarded as the highest achievement in travel, tourism and hospitality.

Inkaterra: Winner of the LATA 2012 Award for Sustainability

It was celebrations all round this week, as Inkaterra was recognised for the third consecutive year at this year’s LATA Awards in London. This year Inkaterra were awarded for their efforts towards Sustainability.

The awards recognise and reward members for their excellence in areas including sustainability, customer service, innovation and promotional success while encouraging travel to the region. The annual awards are highly regarded amongst the Latin American travel industry and seen as a true reflection of the companies who go above and beyond on a day-to-day basis while working in the region. Nominations come from LATA members, all specialists in their field, who are asked to put forward the company or individual, that they think are most worthy of an award in the specific areas. A panel of judges appointed by the LATA committee then decide on the winners.

Since 1975 Inkaterra has been leading the way in eco-tourism and sustainability in South America. Their mission seeks to achieve excellence in eco-tourism and conservation, continually evaluating the real cultural, social and natural values around us whilst creating authentic experiences for their guests. Inkaterra promotes Scientific Research for the Conservation of Ecosystems and Natural Resources funded by Ecotourism, as a replicable model for local communities; offering authentic experiences, capturing, disseminating and educating about the culture and nature of Peru.

In the spotlight: Gastón Acurio’s Restaurant Empire

We have much to thank Gastón Acurio for. This iconic chef has been the catalyst for the great movement in popularity for Peruvian food across the world. His first restaurant Astrid y Gastón’ was an instant success in the city of Lima, and over the past decade his food and restaurant empire has gone from strength to strength. With over 30 restaurants and a weekly TV show, Gastón is Peru’s most famous chef, and arguably the best known Peruvian in the world. He is now set to open his 2nd restaurant in Spain in the heart of Barcelona. The Tanta Bistro will bring all the richness of Peruvian cuisine to the people of Barcelona. All cravings of Peru will be met, and there will no doubt be new avid fans of Peruvian food.

Gastón recently collaborated with Jordi Roca, famous Spanish Pastry Chef for the BBC’s Collaboration Culture Project. The BBC joined 14 creative people from around the world together, and then paired them up to work on an art project together. Jordi Roca flew to the city of Lima, where himself and Gaston devised sweets made from different varieties of Peruvian potatoes grown high in the Andes, such as potato and chilli jellies and roses made from potato petals and caramel. Gastón and Jordi took to the streets of Lima to give people the chance to taste their collaboration. The Mayor of Lima and the president’s wife were among the few who were lucky enough to taste their take on Peruvian potatoes.

The growth in popularity of Peruvian cuisine would not have been possible without him. His mission isn’t just about opening restaurants, but about selling the country of Peru to the world. He has been known to describe his country as a happy marriage between history and opportunity, melding a profusion of international influences: Amerindian, European, African, Chinese and Japanese, with Peru’s extraordinarily diverse climate and geography as it’s backdrop.

Food is a big part of the Peruvian way of life and subsequently a focus across all of the Inkaterra properties. We blend traditional Andean food with contemporary cuisine, creating an innovative fusion-style fare, and always impeccably served. For those that love indulging in organic and fresh produce, Peru is the go-to-destination, with Inkaterra the ideal place to rest your head.

As Peruvian food continues to grow in popularity, so too will Gastón. Long may the love of Peruvian food foster across the world.

The recent Virtuoso Travel Week conference in Las Vegas, an event showcasing the news and updates from the luxury travel market, identified ‘Sustainable Tourism’ as a key emerging trend. Top destinations and travel providers expressed a strong commitment to products and practices that support this movement. Inkaterra, a leader in this recent emerging trend, has had this at the heart of all their movements since opening in 1975.

To put it simply, sustainable tourism is the desire to preserve this beautiful world in which we live in.
